CD - This Precious Life - Cord Heineking/Léah Kline
Album This Precious Life release 2015
The nine songs Kline sings and ‘recites’ were written with bassist and composer Cord Heineking. Kline has a deep crystal-clear voice with which she creates supple phrasing and undulating dynamics. In the distance gleams a hint of Gretchen Parlato’s timbre and intonation. And just like that American singer, there reigns the impression that sometimes Kline stands apart from the accompaniment. She finds herself in her own world, translating it into intense vocal recitation.
She hypnotizes with her sensual voice. Alongside those hypnotic vocals ‘This Precious Life’ floats on languorous ‘cool’ groove rhythms, delineated by floating keyboards, tingling harmonies and subtle improvisation. Sometimes the sounds of fusion with a whiff of Lee Ritenour / Steely Dan (‘Believe’) and then neo-soul à la Jill Scott (‘Love Unconditional’).
In ‘This Precious Life’ Kline attempts to bring the worlds of jazz and yoga together. That takes some looking into, because the music is not so original. And that’s not a negative judgment because the songs are a delight to the ear. It is at this point where you stop and realize that jazz music – with exceptions of course – is an ideal medium to help you relax and bounce back with a good dose of energy. In that respect, Kline's approach to the connection between jazz and yoga (or meditation) – and its power – is very interesting. ‘This Precious Life’ is a delicious record to make you feel good.
Tip: listen to this album with headphones and let yourself be enchanted by the voice of Léah Kline.
